Step-by-Step
3. Time to Get Cleaning!
Okay, deep breath! You've got your supplies, you've read the manual (right?), and you're ready to tackle this throttle sensor. Let's get started. First, locate the throttle body. It's usually attached to the intake manifold, near the air filter. If you're not sure where it is, a quick search online for your car's make and model should point you in the right direction.
Once you've found the throttle body, carefully disconnect the air intake hose. This will give you access to the throttle plate, which is the part that opens and closes to control airflow into the engine. You'll probably see some buildup of gunk and grime around the plate.
Now, spray the throttle body cleaner onto the throttle plate and inside the throttle body. Don't be shy, but don't go overboard either. Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes to loosen the deposits. Then, use your soft-bristled brush to gently scrub away the gunk. You might need to repeat this process a few times to get everything nice and clean.
Once you're satisfied with the cleaning, use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe away any excess cleaner and loosened deposits. Make sure everything is dry before reassembling the air intake hose. Reconnect the negative battery cable, and you're good to go! Start your car and let it idle for a few minutes. You might notice a slight change in the idle at first, but it should smooth out as the engine adjusts.
